We aim to showcase the journey of Italian immigrants to Iowa and highlight their significant impact on the state. Through the creation of a museum, event venue, and educational center, we aspire to attract businesses and individuals from all corners of Iowa. Our vision is to make Des Moines the ultimate destination for everything Italian, offering a rich experience blending tourism, education, history, and leisure.
We will realize this vision by expanding our programs. Our goals include:
- Youth Program Expand opportunities for children to connect with their heritage through an extended summer camp featuring Italian folk dance, language, cooking, art, and genealogy lessons, fostering cultural appreciation and hands-on learning experiences.
- Senior Program Create opportunities for seniors to mentor, volunteer, and lead classes, allowing them to share their knowledge, skills, and traditions while fostering intergenerational connections within the community.
- Community Program Preserve Iowa’s rich history by restoring the historical Butler Mansion, transforming it into a cultural and community hub. The restored space will be available for both public and private use, providing a venue for events, programs, and gatherings. Additionally, restored bedroom suites will be available for hosting bridal parties, visiting bocce competitors or offering couples an intimate weekend escape. The creation of a Bocce Pavilion will host national tournaments, as well as youth and adult leagues, promoting community engagement and celebrating Italian heritage through sport.
- Education Center Establish a dedicated space for classes, specialized education, and workshops, providing opportunities for lifelong learning. The center will also offer rental facilities for educators, fostering a dynamic environment for cultural, artistic, and professional development programs.
- Cultural & Heritage Programs Expand our museum to host traveling exhibits and showcase Iowa’s Italian heritage through interactive displays and historical artifacts. Enhance our genealogy services by increasing computer access, offering research documents, and providing educational classes. Create dedicated spaces for cultural celebrations, an artisan art studio, a demonstration kitchen, and hands-on classes to preserve and promote Italian traditions. Revitalize community engagement by bringing back The Italian-American Heritage Festival of Iowa, celebrating our rich heritage through food, music, and cultural activities.
- Courtyard, Banquet Hall & Catering Kitchen Develop a beautifully designed courtyard, banquet hall, and catering kitchen to host weddings, events, conventions, lectures, movie screenings, and social gatherings. Additionally, create rentable spaces for small businesses, clubs, and organizations, fostering community engagement and economic opportunities while preserving Italian heritage.
- Merchant Store Establish a merchant store offering a curated selection of authentic Italian goods, including specialty foods, artisan products, and handcrafted items. This will provide visitors with the opportunity to experience Italian culture firsthand and support local artisans, while also promoting cultural exchange and education.
- Café & Coffee Bar Create a cozy café and coffee bar serving authentic Italian beverages and dishes made with fresh ingredients, including herbs and vegetables grown in our own garden. This space will offer visitors a taste of Italy while promoting sustainability and the use of locally sourced, garden-fresh produce.
- Speakeasy Design a vintage-inspired speakeasy offering a unique, immersive experience that celebrates Italian culture through classic cocktails, fine wines, and small plates. This hidden gem will evoke the charm of Italy’s past, providing a stylish and intimate space for social gatherings, special events, and community connection.
